This is a great comfort drink on a cold night. Delicious chocolate taste and topped with whipped cream.

A cup of hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and shaved chocolate this Recipe

As the weather starts to get cold, one's thoughts turn to a cup of hot chocolate. Who doesn't like the creamy, chocolate flavor that is just so comforting? It is hot and soothing, making you feel warm all over; even your hands get warm from holding your cup.

We know with hot chocolate packets, the convenience of just adding water is a great time saver, but it doesn't take that long to have a rich cup of chocolate. Sometimes, a few minutes on the stove is worth the richness of a homemade cup of hot chocolate.

There are several toppings that can be added to enhance the deliciousness and appearance of the chocolate even further. There is whipped cream (our favorite), marshmallows or marshmallow cream, even vanilla ice cream. To add even more flavor, top it with some shaved chocolate!

Ingredients:

  • whole milk
  • half & half
  • heavy cream
  • cocoa powder
  • salt
  • vanilla extract
  • sugar
  • semi sweet chocolate chips
  • Whipped cream, optional
  • Marshmallows, optional

Making hot chocolate:

In a medium-sized pan over medium heat, add the milk, half-and-half, heavy cream, cocoa, sugar, and salt. Whisk until the ingredients are all combined.

Ingredients

The cocoa becomes smooth with whisking; it might take a few minutes. Heat until hot, not boiling.

Real chocolaty

Add the vanilla extract and chocolate chips to the cocoa mixture. Cook until the mixture is hot and the chocolate chips are melted.

Now, it's hot chocolate time! Just pour some into a cup and top it with your preferred topping. Some options include marshmallows, whipped cream, or a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. We used whipped cream with a slight shaving of semi-sweet chocolate on top. Enjoy!
