When the weather starts getting cold, one's thoughts turn to a hot cup of hot chocolate. Who doesn't like the creamy chocolate flavor that is just so comforting? It is hot and soothing and just makes you feel all warm, even your hands get warm by holding your cup.
We know with hot chocolate packets, the convenience of just adding water is a great time saver, but it doesn't take that long to have a rich cup of chocolate. Sometimes, a few minutes on the stove is worth the richness of a homemade cup of hot chocolate.
There are several toppings to put on the hot chocolate to make the deliciousness of the chocolate even better. There is whipped cream, our favorite, marshmallows or marshmallow cream. And to add even more flavor, top that with some shaved chocolate!
Ingredients for Hot Chocolate:
- whole milk
- half & half
- heavy cream
- cocoa powder
- salt
- vanilla extract
- sugar
- semi sweet chocolate chips
Making hot chocolate:
In a pan, add the milk, half & half, cream, cocoa, sugar, and salt. Whisk the pan with a whisk and cook until the cocoa is all combined.
The cocoa all becomes smooth with whisking; it might take a few minutes. Heat until hot, not boiling.
Now it's time to add the vanilla and chocolate chips to the cocoa mixture. Cook until it is nice and hot and the chocolate chips are melted.
Now, it's hot chocolate time! Just pour some in a cup and top it with whatever you like best with your drink. We used whipped cream with a slight shaving of chocolate to the top. Enjoy!
