Easy French Toast Recipe
This Easy French Toast Recipe is a great breakfast alternative to bacon and eggs or pancakes. We cook this eggy bread to a golden brown with beautiful crispy edges. Just top the hot toast off with a pad of soft butter. For more flavor, add some maple syrup.
This eggy bread is not just for weekday meals, but it makes a great Sunday brunch for family or friends. We use stale bread or pop it in a 250ºF oven for about 10 minutes.
Another good thing to prevent soggy toast is not leaving the bread soaking too long in the custard mixture, just 10 to 20 seconds is sufficient. Drip some of the excess liquid off of the piece of bread., and cook this on medium heat so that you don't burn the toast and it gets cooked all the way through.
When cooking the eggy bread, add a pad of butter for great flavor and prevent it from sticking. Some people prefer to add some oil to the pan so it doesn't burn. We find cooking the bread on medium heat and wiping out the pan between cooking pieces of bread, then adding a little more butter helps make every piece browned and golden, but not burned.
Ingredients:
- Bread- You can use a brioche, Challah, or Texas toast; it holds the custard without falling apart.
- .Whole milk- We use whole milk because we want a rich creamy base for the custard.
- Half & half- We add some half & half to the liquid ingredients for a little more richness. You can just use one kind of milk that you want or even use just heavy cream.
- Sugar- This gives the custard a little bit of sweetness which we like in the toast
- Vanilla- This adds more flavor to the custard.
- Cinnamon-We like our toast with a little hint of cinnamon for more flavor, this is optional.
- Butter-This gives your toast a great buttery flavor when you are frying. It is good to wipe the pan out each time you add more french toast, so that the butter doesn't burn while you are getting your bread ready to fry.
Prepping Easy French Toast Recipe:
- Cut your bread into ¾ to 1 inch slices.
- If you don't have stale bread, put your bread into a 250ºF oven for about 8 minutes on each side.
- Take a large bowl out to mix all of the custard ingredients so you are able to dip your bread into it.
- Put your bread into a skillet that holds at least 2 pieces of bread.
- Now is the time to soften your butter to top your finished toast with and heat up your maple syrup.
- Put the cooked French toast onto a rack on a sheet pan in a 250ºF oven to keep warm, and not soggy.
Things to go with your breakfast:
- Warmed maple syrup-so delicious
- Berries- go well with the toast
- Bacon or sausage-In case you want meat
- toasted coconut- sprinkled on the top of the french toast
- Fried eggs-Another protein that you can have (We've even tried cooking up the remaining egg mixture and serving it with the french toast, but that might be off-putting to some 🤭).
Making the French toast:
Cut your bread into thick pieces, about ¾ - 1 inch thick for this classic french toast. If the bread is not stale, put it into the oven at 250ºF for about 10-12 minutes or turn about halfway through. Now, get all of your ingredients ready so that it is easy to put together.
Mix the eggs, sugar, salt, vanilla, cinnamon, milk, and half & half. Whisk so that no egg whites are showing; you don't want egg whites showing on your finished toast.
Put your pan over medium heat and add some butter to fry the bread in.
Now, dip the bread into the custard for about 10 to 20 seconds on each side. Let the excess custard drip off for about 2 seconds before putting it in the pan.
Put your bread pieces into the pan with the butter and let it cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side (recommend 3 on first side, then 2 on the other side). You want them to be golden brown and not burnt. It is easier for this to happen if you wipe the pan clean after each time you cook the bread so that the butter doesn't burn while you are getting the next pieces of bread ready.
The bread is a nice golden brown and the edges are getting crispy.
In an oven still set at 250ºF, put your toast onto a sheet pan with a rack in it and put it into the oven to keep warm until all of the pieces are ready.
When ready to serve, pour over the maple syrup, followed by the pad of butter and finally, dust with some powdered sugar. serve whatever you like with your eggy bread such as bacon and strawberries and enjoy!
