Steak Sandwich
Philadelphia Steak Sandwich
Philadelphia steak sandwiches are always a great, quick meal when you don't have much time to make dinner. We like to keep some of the sandwich meat, wrapped up and ready to go in the freezer so that they are always handy.
When we went to Philadelphia we looked for the sandwich shop that we had heard about, the sandwiches were supposed to be great. We knew it was located on south street so we walked around for awhile looking for it, there was a line around the corner. It was called Jim's South St. and everyone there took their turn and ordered what they wanted on their steak. They made it fast and it was delicious, the steak was cooked right and the rolls were nice and soft. It's a good place to visit if you are in Philly.
Steak sandwich is made with top of the round
Sizzling steak for sandwiches
This is how we make our steak sandwich to make it as good as in Philly. We start with very thinly sliced top of the round steak. We go to the butcher shop and have them cut it very thin. When we go home, we take several pieces of the thin steak and set them on top of each other. Then, we wrap them in parchment paper and tin foil for the freezer; this way it is easy to take one out when you want it. After some are frozen, you make your sandwich.
Making the sandwich
Great steak sandwich
We use an electric grill but you can use a pan, it doesn't matter. We put some butter on the grill and when it is melted we plop on the steak. While the meat is cooking, we pull it apart with two wooden spoons until it is in pieces. When they are cooked through, we put cheese on them and kind of mix it together. The choice in Philly is cheez whiz, but you can use whatever kind of cheese you like. American cheese and Provolone are our favorites.
Toppings:
It is usually fried onions on top of the sandwich but anything makes them taste good. Some ideas are bacon, tomato and lettuce, mayonnaise, ketchup, green peppers, all good choices.
The meat is then put on a good sub or hoagie roll and served with chips or french fries. It is really delicious, try it!
Ingredients
- 2 lbs. top of the round steak
- 1 T. butter
- 1 jar Cheez Whiz or any sliced cheese of your choice (American, Provolone etc.)
- 4 Hoagie rolls

- Put the steak meat onto the grill and pull apart with two wooden spoons until you have many pieces.
- When cooked add cheez- whiz or cheese onto the steak and mix around until combined

Notes
I buy 4 or 5 pounds of steak meat so that I have enough for extras in the freezer when I want a quick meal.
