A Smash burger is a great option for a quick weeknight meal or a great get-together with friends. They are a smashed ball of ground meat that can be cooked in just a few minutes.
A Smash burger is a great alternative to the traditional hamburger, which is made with ground beef formed into thicker patties, then cooked on a stove or a grill. Smash burgers are formed with balls of ground meat, then smashed into thin, flat hamburgers while on a griddle or pan.
We make our smash burgers slideres with about 4 ounces of ground meat. To make a smash burger, form your meat into a ball and place it in a cast-iron pan or a griddle, if you have one. Smash down the balls with a spatula or hamburger press until they are thin and flattened. Let them cook until one side gets a nice crust, then flip them on the other side. The smaller hamburger patties give your sandwich that great taste of a slightly crisp burger patty, but it still has all that beef flavor.
Toppings:
We like to top the smashburger with a piece of American cheese on both patties for a real cheesy flavor. We use yellow American cheese, but white American cheese tastes just as good. If you want a slightly spicier flavor, use some pepper jack.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound of ground beef- We use 20/80% ground chuck, but 7% beef works well too.
- Slider buns
- Toppings
Suggested Toppings:
- Cheese, (American melts the easiest, but other cheeses such as cheddar, pepper jack, and Swiss work well too)
- Onions, raw or grilled
- Tomatoes
- Pickles
- Lettuce
- Bacon
- Jalepeños
- Ketchup
- Mustard
- Mayonaise
- Barbecue sauce
- Ranch dressing
Making the sliders:
Form your meat into 2-ounce balls; you need two balls for each smashburger slider. Place two balls on a hot griddle and press down flat with a sturdy spatula or hamburger press. We put a piece of parchment paper on the burger before pressing down so the spatula doesn't stick to the meat.

Let the burger get a crust on it before you turn the burger, about 1-2 minutes.

Add a slice of American cheese, or other cheese of your choice, to each patty before you put it on the bun. The cheese is optional.

Now is the time to put this little burger on a nice slider bun. Toast the bun, if you like, or eat it as it is. Top the burger with as many or as few toppings as you want.
