These delicious upgraded hamburgers make a satisfying and quick meal for a weeknight. Cook them with onions and mushrooms like we did for extra flavor.
Hamburger steaks are a dish that has been served for a long time. The reason could be because they don't take long to make and taste great. Perfect for a weeknight meal when you have been busy all day.
It is like a hamburger (who doesn't like a good hamburger?), but cooked in a very different way. They are flavored with some spices, and we add beef broth and water to make them soft. Then, they are cooked with onions and mushrooms in a gravy. IIf your family doesn't like onions or mushrooms, you can totally leave them out.
Ingredients you will need:
- Ground beef- We use 80/20 percent fat. We have also used meat with less fat, they both work in this recipe.
- Dry breadcrumb - the dry type works well in this recipe, no need for fresh breadcrumbs
- Salt- Brings out the flavors.
- Black pepper- Adds that spice that always pairs well with salt.
- Water- Adds more moisture and binds ingredients together.
- Garlic powder- Another spice that is used a lot, expecially when you are serving these with onions.
- Cornstarch- Used to thicken the gravy.
- Beef broth- essential when making a dark, rich gravy with hamburger steaks.
- Onions, optional
- Mushrooms, optional

Making the Hamburger Steaks:
In a bowl add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and water. Mix them all together.

Form the meat into thick patties; We sometimes make just simple round patties or shape them into the traditional oval shape.

Put the patties into a pan and fry them until one side is nice and browned, then flip over to the other side and cook until that side's done.

This is the time to add onions or mushrooms if you like. Let them saute with the hamburgers until they get a little color on them. Not too long since they will be cooked in gravy.

Add the beef broth and let that mix with the hamburger juices and onions for a delicious gravy. Cook for about 5 to 10 minutes so the flavors meld together.

Serve them with your favorite sides for a satisfying meal.
