Bratwurst and Sauerkraut
Bratwurst and sauerkraut is always popular around October since it is Oktoberfest time in Germany ( It technically starts in September for your information). We went to an Oktoberfest here in Florida a few years ago and it was fun. There was a buffet with several different kinds of German food and desserts that were really tasty. There was also German music and dancing which always goes along with Oktoberfest. The chicken dance was popular and many people joined in including the kids; it is fun.
This is our take on a popular German dish of Bratwurst and Sauerkraut.
Making the Bratwurst:
We have a nice dutch oven that was recently got and we love it. We used it to make this dish, but any large pan will do. First we put some oil into the pan, we used canola oil, then put the bratwurst in and let it brown on one side. Then, turn it till it is browned on the other side. Take the bratwurst out of the pan and let them sit on a plate while you make the sauerkraut.
Add a little more oil and dump in the onions and cook for a few minutes until they soften just a little. They will cook for a long time in the pan.
add the minced garlic and cook for another minute or two.
Now it's time to add the bag of sauerkraut, just one you buy in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. On top of the sauerkraut, add the brown sugar, salt, and a bottle of beer, then just mix together. We used an Oktoberfest beer, 11.2 oz., we thought this was a good choice since it is Oktoberfest, but you can use any kind of beer that you want.
Just place the browned bratwurst on top of the sauerkraut mixture and bring to a boil. Then, turn the heat down to low and cook for about 1 ½ hours to 2 hours.
This meal is really good served with a soft pretzel and cheese sauce. A nice glass of cold beer tops off the Octoberfest feeling.
